Interview with Artists I Admire: Andrea of Godigo

When I first saw Andrea's work, about two years ago, I was impressed. Here is a young woman, whose art is far from decorative, as it communicates feelings and ideas so well. Read on to find out more.

Tell us a few things about yourself.

My name is Andrea, I'm 19 and I live on the central coast of California. I work as a web designer, but art has always been one of the biggest passions in my life. I have two little sisters (equally, if not more, artistic and talented) and a huge, fluffy cat named Duke.

How did you come up with the name 'Godigo' for your Etsy shop?

I came up with the name Godigo because when I was little I kind of spoke my own language when I was learning to talk. Thank you was "agabichi," grandpa was "pocky" and cookie was "godigo." I like to stay in touch with my inner 5 year old so I thought godigo would be a nice reminder of that.

Your work seems to reflect feelings and situations so successfully. What are the things that inspire you?

I'm inspired by a lot: architecture, music, fashion, movies, nature. My art is mostly based off my own experiences and outlooks though. Every girl I draw is a piece of me at a time in my life. And when I put her down on paper, I feel like I learn a little bit more about who I am.

I think your art has a lot of personality, it doesn't look like anything else, really. Have you been influenced by anyone though?

My art is influenced by the bittersweet, slightly creepy, and whimsical. Tim Burton has always been an inspiration. Also Kay Nielsen, a fairy tale illustrator from the early 1900s. His art made me want to be an artist.

What are your plans for the future?

For the future, I want to make sure art always has an important place in my life, no matter how hectic life gets. It's like a therapy, and being able to share it on Etsy with people who appreciate it is an amazing experience. Hopefully soon I'll add some paintings, but for now my simple sketched ladies make me happy enough.

I would like to thank Andrea, and wish her all the best, because she deserves it. She is a young woman with so much talent, a genuine artist - and if you are impressed like I am, go to her Etsy shop and find lots more of Godigo art!
