AW12-13 Fashion Trend Report: Military Aristocracy
The military trend is not something new on the catwalks; this time it's all about the military aristocracy, a camouflaged 'utility' style that comes with rich and luxurious fabrics like velvet, leather and very defined, tailored, stiff shapes. Salvatore Ferragamo's collection may well be the epitome of this.
Especially look for details like belts, several styles of military collars, military style buttons and also epaulettes. Victoria Beckham did a great job of adding these without being over the top.
Still, this trend may look like utility, but let us not fool ourselves: It is definitely very rich and luxurious, like a high rank statement in itself. See the alligator and the double faced cashmere in Max Mara, for instance:

SS12 Fashion Trend Report: All White
White is a must have classic, especially for summer, and the current season was no exception. Total white simply had to be there, either in crisp, almost sterilised, clean looks that favored precision-cut tailoring, or in frivolous, girly ensembles where broderie anglaise, lace and sheer fabrics were absolute stars.

SS12 Fashion Trend Report: Sea World
I am convinced you are going to love the trend I have chosen to present to you today! Designers this season seem to be inspired by what lies below sea level. And they have done an amazing job showing us magical clothes that imitate creatures like sea anemones and sponges, or even sea foam, or include concrete shapes like starfish, seahorses and sea shells. Mermaids, as well as all the colours of the creatures (mythical or real) that live inside the sea are also in fashion. The runway shows of Alexander McQueen, Chanel and Versace were simply a feast for the eyes.
Είμαι πεπεισμένη ότι θα αγαπήσετε την τάσηπου έχω επιλέξει να σας παρουσιάσω σήμερα! Οι σχεδιαστές αυτήν τη σεζόν φαίνεται πως εμπνέονται από ό,τι υπάρχει κάτω από το επίπεδο της θάλασσας. Και έχουν κάνει μια καταπληκτική δουλειά, δείχνοντάς μας μαγευτικά ρούχα που μιμούνται πλάσματα όπως οι θαλάσσιες ανεμώνες και τα σφουγγάρια, ή ακόμη και τον αφρό της θάλασσας, ή περιλαμβάνουν σχήματα όπως οι αστερίες, οι ιππόκαμποι και τα όστρακα. Οι γοργόνες, καθώς επίσης και όλα τα χρώματα των πλασμάτων (μυθικών ή πραγματικών) που ζουν μέσα στη θάλασσα είναι επίσης στη μόδα. Οι πασαρέλες των Alexander McQueen, Chanel και Versace ήταν απλά μια πανδαισία.

Disco and Bohemian!
I can definitely see someone wearing these on New Year's Eve! They are the perfect disco and bohemian earrings! But really, they make for the perfect four season pair, to add a touch of glamour to your outfits, from party season to summer holidays!

Victorian Rocker Leather Cuff
I love the Victorian and the rocker trend this season! I had saved this piece of fabric with black rhinestones embroidered on it for when the inspiration would be right, and a few days ago, eureka! I combined it with a grey leather part from an old handbag which had not been used at all, and connected the ends with chain. The cuff fastens with two magnetic clasps, if you pull the chains enough for the magnets to come close. I have to say, it is one of my favorite creations, and it's one of a kind!

Fashion and Traditional Greek Costumes
Fashion is a form of art. It is inextricably connected to various places, various cultures, and various times in the past. Modern designers are inspired by traditional costumes and incorporate elements of those into their collections, at the same time presenting something new, which speaks to the people of our time.
Η μόδα είναι μια μορφή τέχνης. Είναι άρρηκτα συνδεδεμένη με τόπους, πολιτισμούς, και εποχές. Οι σύγχρονοι σχεδιαστές εμπνέονται από τις παραδοσιακές στολές των λαών και ενσωματώνουν στοιχεία τους στις συλλογές τους, παρουσιάζοντας ταυτόχρονα κάτι εντελώς καινούριο, που μιλάει στους ανθρώπους του καιρού μας.
Regardless of nationality, we all carry this collective memory of our tradition inside, even if it seems to be forgotten. Distant memories, images from old stories, visits to folk museums, folk dance festivals, all these things and more help keep traditional costumes in our hearts. And Greece has an extremely rich heritage in that respect.
Άσχετα από την εθνικότητά μας, όλοι κουβαλούμε μέσα μας μια συλλογική μνήμη της παράδοσής μας, ακόμη κι αν μοιάζει ξεχασμένη. Μακρινές αναμνήσεις, εικόνες από λαϊκά παραμύθια, επισκέψεις σε λαογραφικά μουσεία, φεστιβάλ και παραδοσιακοί χοροί, όλα αυτά και περισσότερα βοηθούν να διατηρούμε τις παραδοσιακές φορεσιές στις καρδιές μας. Και η Ελλάδα έχει έναν πολύ μεγάλο πλούτο σε αυτόν τον τομέα.
Here we will present some cases of modern fashion design inspired by the Greek traditional costume. Αs the Beyond Dress Codes exhibition showed, clothes tell a lot about a country’s history, customs and traditions, as well as its social and economic circumstances. At the same time, they convey a wealth of information about the gender, age, social status, personal situation, even the personality of the person wearing them. Modern designers are getting inspired by traditional costumes, and this is so much more than a trend. Ιt's a call for everyone to rediscover, redefine and embrace who we are.
Εδώ θα παρουσιάσουμε ορισμένες περιπτώσεις στις οποίες η σύγχρονη μόδα εμπνέεται από την Ελληνική παραδοσιακή φορεσιά. Όπως έδειξε η έκθεση Beyond Dress Codes, τα παραδοσιακά ρούχα λένε πολλά για την ιστορία, τα έθιμα και τις παραδόσεις μιας χώρας, όπως επίσης και για τις κοινωνικοοικονομικές της συνθήκες. Ταυτόχρονα, είναι φορείς πλήθους πληροφοριών σχετικά με το φύλο, την ηλικία, την κοινωνική θέση, την προσωπική ζωή, ακόμη και την προσωπικότητα εκείνου που τα φοράει. Οι σύγχρονοι σχεδιαστές εμπνέονται από την παράδοση, και αυτό είναι κάτι πολύ περισσότερο από μία τάση. Είναι ένα κάλεσμα προς όλους μας να ανακαλύψουμε εκ νέου, να επαναπροσδιορίσουμε και να αποδεχτούμε αυτό που είμαστε.
After all, both as an art form and a necessity, fashion actually builds on tradition to create the next new trends. It is only by using pre-existing knowledge in a creative and inspired way, that progress is possible. Nothing comes from nothing, and no matter how original designers may be, they always need a starting point. If this starting point is the Greek traditional costume, then this is making us really proud and, more importantly, helps us connect with our past, at the same time encouraging us to work for a better future.
Εξάλλου, και ως μορφή τέχνης, και ως αναγκαιότητα, η μόδα στην πραγματικότητα 'χτίζει' πάνω στην παράδοση για να δημιουργήσει τις νέες τάσεις. Μόνο με την χρήση της προϋπάρχουσας γνώσης, με έναν δημιουργικό και εμπνευσμένο τρόπο, είναι δυνατή η πρόοδος. Τίποτα δε γεννιέται από το τίποτα, και ανεξάρτητα από το πόσο πρωτότυποι μπορεί να είναι οι σχεδιαστές, χρειάζονται πάντα μια αφετηρία. Αν μάλιστα αυτή η αφετηρία είναι οι Ελληνικές παραδοσιακές φορεσιές, αυτό μας γεμίζει με υπερηφάνια και, το πιο σημαντικό, μας βοηθά να συνδεθούμε με το παρελθόν μας, ενθαρρύνοντάς μας παράλληλα να εργαστούμε για ένα καλύτερο μέλλον.
Starting with the Jean Paul Gaultier Fall RTW 2010 collection, the influence of the traditional Greek costumes is particularly obvious. Gaultier presented clothes that are clearly addressed to the woman of today, in which he incorporated elements of Greek tradition; and he seemed to have studied the clothes of that tradition extremely well, but he went on to create wonderfully contemporary designs.
Ξεκινώντας με τη φθινοπωρινή συλλογή 2010 του Ζαν Πωλ Γκοτιέ, η επίδραση των παραδοσιακών Ελληνικών στολών είναι ιδιαίτερα εμφανής. Ο Γκοτιέ παρουσίασε ρούχα που απευθύνονται ξεκάθαρα στη σύγχρονη γυναίκα, στα οποία ενσωμάτωσε στοιχεία της Ελληνικής παράδοσης. Και φαίνεται πως μελέτησε τα ρούχα αυτής της παράδοσης πολύ καλά, όμως προχώρησε στη δημιουργία υπέροχων, σύγχρονων σχεδίων.
Next we are moving to John Galliano, who presented very theatrical clothes for his Fall 2009 collection, drawing inspiration from Russia and the Balkans, so his clothes incorporate elements from the costumes of Northern Greece.
Some of the fashion critics wrote that Galliano's runway show was perfect in every aspect, but it had little, if anything, to do with fashion trends. We shouldn't forget, however, that it takes a very wide understanding of clothes history and knowledge of fashion, for critics to be able to judge. In 2011, two years later, we can say that we saw signs of what are huge trends now, as we speak, in that Galliano show. So strong is the inspiration that some designers have, that they actually set trends, instead of following them. Regardless of John Galliano's personal troubles, he is without doubt one of the most brilliant fashion designers of his generation.
Μερικοί κριτικοί μόδας έγραψαν τότε ότι η επίδειξη του Γκαλιάνο ήταν μεν τέλεια από κάθε άποψη σαν παρουσίαση, αλλά είχε ελάχιστα έως καθόλου στοιχεία μόδας και τάσεων. Δεν θα έπρεπε όμως να ξεχνάμε ότι χρειάζεται πολύ ευρεία αντίληψη της ιστορίας του ενδύματος και γνώση της μόδας, για να μπορούν οι κριτικοί να είναι ικανοί να κρίνουν. Το 2011, δυο μόλις χρόνια αργότερα, γνωρίζουμε ότι είδαμε σημάδια των πιο μεγάλων τάσεων αυτή τη στιγμή που μιλάμε, σε εκείνο το σόου του Γκαλιάνο. Τόσο δυνατή είναι η έμπνευση που έχουν ορισμένοι σχεδιαστές, ώστε πράγματι να δημιουργούν τις τάσεις, αντί να τις ακολουθούν. Ανεξάρτητα από τους προσωπικούς του μπελάδες, ο Τζον Γκαλιάνο είναι χωρίς αμφιβολία ένας από τους ευφυέστερους σχεδιαστές μόδας της γενιάς του.
Finally, there are of course Greek designers that are influenced by the Greek traditional costumes, even though this influence is often exhibited in a less theatrical way. Working with one's own tradition can be trickier than working with other cultural influences, and it can easily interrupt one's creativity because it is too familiar. This is the reason Greek designers are careful not to produce clothes that look too much like costumes. In their creations you can see pleats, tassels, patterns and textures that are 'quiet' evidence of a rich tradition in clothes!
Τέλος, υπάρχουν φυσικά Έλληνες σχεδιαστές που είναι επηρεασμένοι από τις Ελληνικές παραδοσιακές στολές, αν και όπως παρατηρούμε, πιο συγκρατημένα και με όχι και τόσο θεατρικό τρόπο. Το να δουλεύει κανείς με τη δική του παράδοση μπορεί να είναι δυσκολότερο και πιο περίπλοκο από το να δουλεύει με άλλες πολιτιστικές επιρροές, και μπορεί εύκολα να ανακόψει τη δημιουργικότητά του ακριβώς διότι είναι πάρα πολύ γνώριμο. Αυτός είναι και ο λόγος που οι Έλληνες σχεδιαστές είναι πολύ προσεκτικοί, έτσι ώστε να μην παράγουν ρούχα που να μοιάζουν υπερβολικά με πραγματικές στολές. Στις δημιουργίες τους μπορείτε να δείτε πιέτες, φουντίτσες, υφές και επαναλαμβανόμενα μοτίβα που αποτελούν 'ήσυχες' ενδείξεις μιας πλούσιας παράδοσης σε ρούχα!

Στη συνέχεια ερχόμαστε στον Τζον Γκαλιάνο, ο οποίος παρουσίασε πολύ θεατρικά ρούχα στη χειμερινή κολεξιόν του 2009, αντλώντας έμπνευση από τη Ρωσία και τα Βαλκάνια, και οι δημιουργίες του ενσωματώνουν στοιχεία από τις στολές της Βόρειας Ελλάδας.

Some of the fashion critics wrote that Galliano's runway show was perfect in every aspect, but it had little, if anything, to do with fashion trends. We shouldn't forget, however, that it takes a very wide understanding of clothes history and knowledge of fashion, for critics to be able to judge. In 2011, two years later, we can say that we saw signs of what are huge trends now, as we speak, in that Galliano show. So strong is the inspiration that some designers have, that they actually set trends, instead of following them. Regardless of John Galliano's personal troubles, he is without doubt one of the most brilliant fashion designers of his generation.
Μερικοί κριτικοί μόδας έγραψαν τότε ότι η επίδειξη του Γκαλιάνο ήταν μεν τέλεια από κάθε άποψη σαν παρουσίαση, αλλά είχε ελάχιστα έως καθόλου στοιχεία μόδας και τάσεων. Δεν θα έπρεπε όμως να ξεχνάμε ότι χρειάζεται πολύ ευρεία αντίληψη της ιστορίας του ενδύματος και γνώση της μόδας, για να μπορούν οι κριτικοί να είναι ικανοί να κρίνουν. Το 2011, δυο μόλις χρόνια αργότερα, γνωρίζουμε ότι είδαμε σημάδια των πιο μεγάλων τάσεων αυτή τη στιγμή που μιλάμε, σε εκείνο το σόου του Γκαλιάνο. Τόσο δυνατή είναι η έμπνευση που έχουν ορισμένοι σχεδιαστές, ώστε πράγματι να δημιουργούν τις τάσεις, αντί να τις ακολουθούν. Ανεξάρτητα από τους προσωπικούς του μπελάδες, ο Τζον Γκαλιάνο είναι χωρίς αμφιβολία ένας από τους ευφυέστερους σχεδιαστές μόδας της γενιάς του.

Finally, there are of course Greek designers that are influenced by the Greek traditional costumes, even though this influence is often exhibited in a less theatrical way. Working with one's own tradition can be trickier than working with other cultural influences, and it can easily interrupt one's creativity because it is too familiar. This is the reason Greek designers are careful not to produce clothes that look too much like costumes. In their creations you can see pleats, tassels, patterns and textures that are 'quiet' evidence of a rich tradition in clothes!
Τέλος, υπάρχουν φυσικά Έλληνες σχεδιαστές που είναι επηρεασμένοι από τις Ελληνικές παραδοσιακές στολές, αν και όπως παρατηρούμε, πιο συγκρατημένα και με όχι και τόσο θεατρικό τρόπο. Το να δουλεύει κανείς με τη δική του παράδοση μπορεί να είναι δυσκολότερο και πιο περίπλοκο από το να δουλεύει με άλλες πολιτιστικές επιρροές, και μπορεί εύκολα να ανακόψει τη δημιουργικότητά του ακριβώς διότι είναι πάρα πολύ γνώριμο. Αυτός είναι και ο λόγος που οι Έλληνες σχεδιαστές είναι πολύ προσεκτικοί, έτσι ώστε να μην παράγουν ρούχα που να μοιάζουν υπερβολικά με πραγματικές στολές. Στις δημιουργίες τους μπορείτε να δείτε πιέτες, φουντίτσες, υφές και επαναλαμβανόμενα μοτίβα που αποτελούν 'ήσυχες' ενδείξεις μιας πλούσιας παράδοσης σε ρούχα!
