Winning an Oscar: The Dream that came true

Hi lovelies!

Anne Hathaway has won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in the film Les Miserables, at the 85th annual Academy Awards, and finished her acceptance speech with these words: 'Here's hoping that someday in the not too distant future, the misfortunes of Fantine will only be found in stories, and never more in real life.'

In my opinion, Anne Hathaway's I Dreamed A Dream is the only interpretation so far that has made it possible for me to connect so realistically with the lyrics. After all, the approach of the film seems to have been to create a visual interpretation of the music, making it sound more real.

I couldn't help making these.

Apart from Les Miserables, I found many films to be really good this year, and I think the results reflected this. What did you think of this year's Oscars? What was your favorite film?

Lady Lazarus inspiration

Hello my wonderful followers :) Summer is here for good so I have been too lazy to blog lately. But I had to show you something new that I made, and all because of my FB page, which has proved a great source of inspiration. I was asking the other day what my FB page likers' favorite poem was, when I was asked the same question back. I couldn't decide on just one favorite, so I listed a few of my top 10. One of the poems was Sylvia Plath's Lady Lazarus, so I thought about making a new pair of earrings to allude to that and I immediately got to work.

  I have done it again.
  One year in every ten
  I manage it——

  A sort of walking miracle, my skin
  Bright as a Nazi lampshade,
  My right foot

  A paperweight,
  My face a featureless, fine
  Jew linen.

  Peel off the napkin
  O my enemy.
  Do I terrify?——

  The nose, the eye pits, the full set of teeth?
  The sour breath
  Will vanish in a day.

  Soon, soon the flesh
  The grave cave ate will be
  At home on me

  And I a smiling woman.
  I am only thirty.
  And like the cat I have nine times to die.

The Stag at the Pool and the Amoronia antlers earrings

A Stag overpowered by heat came to a spring to drink. Seeing his own shadow reflected in the water, he greatly admired the size and variety of his horns, but felt angry with himself for having such slender and weak feet. While he was thus contemplating himself, a Lion appeared at the pool and crouched to spring upon him. The Stag immediately took to flight, and exerting his utmost speed, as long as the plain was smooth and open, kept himself easily at a safe distance from the Lion. But entering a wood he became entangled by his horns, and the Lion quickly came up to him and caught him. When too late, he thus reproached himself: 'Woe is me! How I have deceived myself! These feet which would have saved me I despised, and I gloried in these antlers which have proved my destruction'.

What is most truly valuable is often underrated.

The Athena Andreadis - Peeling Apples Inspired Collection: Finding England

As you remember from one of my previous posts, I had promised to present to you a series of jewelry pieces inspired by the lovely Athena Andreadis, and more specifically, her new album, Peeling Apples.

This is the first item I made. It is a pair of earrings that feature the Union Jack, inspired by the UK flag pillow, which is in Athena's video.

When I made these, I realised how amazing they look with all the latest fashion trends, plus they are classics! I mean, who doesn't want the Union Jack in their wardrobe?

Black Chain Earrings

For this pair I used a couple of old bracelet connectors and pieces of black chain. It is a one of a kind item. And I think it suits the new AW11-12 fashion trends perfectly! There's this fluidity of the chain, there's the length of the earrings (which is not overwhelming though), there's the black and the silver colour which create just the perfect contrast, there's the simplicity, the darkness, the 'kinkiness' or 'bondage' of the interlinked rings and the geometry that will be seen ALOT this coming season. Alice of the Canon I

Alice in Wonderland is an Amoronia favorite. And it is so many people's favorite. The amazing artist whose Alice illustrations we use widely in making altered art and jewelry nowadays is John Tenniel (1820-1914); his wood engraved illustrations were included in the first print of Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865).

Particularly I love the black and white version of the illustrations. So I sat and made two pairs of earrings...

They are cameo-ish in their concept, but instead of engraved the images are printed. I have a strong liking towards black and white prints, and I guess this explains my fascination with the new stamps for my shop, which I will show you in another post...

The film is going to be released on April 28 in Greece, so I can't wait to see it... I always love to see adaptations of stories, and I don't care what critics may be saying!

Exotic Earrings, Pearls and Coconut Shell Buttons

The current host of the EST weekly challenge is Sandra of zsazsazsu1963 and the lovely theme she picked is Seeds and Pods. I made a bracelet and earrings set with tagua nuts and beads, but I sold it before I even took a picture, so I had to think of something else. Then, I remembered I had rescued a few coconut shell buttons a few months ago, and had kept them for when the inspiration was right...

Exotic Earrings

 

These are one of a kind. Look at the flower carvings on the coconut shell! I think it's lotus, and I have a feeling these buttons were made in India. They measure a rather large 17mm in diameter, and they look perfect combined with potato pearls. Amazingly elegant and so fashionable too!

The following double link gold tone rhinestone chain bracelet was created with a piece of rescued chain and a piece of rescued black ribbon. Only the wire and the clasp are new...

This pair of earrings features a rescued piece of silver rhinestone chain and some pink lace, which I kept from the Greek fashion designer THEIA's invitation to her show last fall. The collage was done on sustainable bamboo.

Hot Heart, Cold Heart

I had friends over at home the night after New Year's and we watched The Holiday, again. I love this film, to me it shows that if you want good things to start happening to you, you have to start loving yourself first. So I dug up some salvaged hearts that I had in my stash, and some unwanted broken chain, and made those two pieces that you see here.

Inspired Round Stud Earrings

In this post I'm going to show you the new earrings I made. They are round studs, and I'd say they are quite inspired. But feel free to show me your favorite round studs as well, link to something you really like in your comments!

OK... I named the first pair 'A Chinese Story', because these earrings were made with scraps of paper from an old admission ticket to the Imperial Treasures of China, at the National Gallery in Athens, Greece, back from 2004.

The second pair I called 'Tea in Translation', and this is why: From the famous Caffè Florian in Venice I obtained a brochure, and the Japanese translation on a red background was so appealing I thought I should make it into earrings!

Glamour Earrings for the Holiday Season

I found a few vintage chandelier octagon prisms and grabbed them! This is the first pair of earrings I made, and I was listening to Loreena McKennitt's winter garden while I was making them, so it seemed only natural to include the cd cover in my photos...

They have an incredible sparkle, which was very hard to capture with my camera, but hopefully those pomegranates on the cover will make them more visible to you. Here they are:
